Refugio Creek
and Tidal Marsh Restoration

Client: City of Hercules

Location: Hercules, California

Year Completed: 2017

RDG designed the Refugio Creek and tidal marsh restoration as mitigation for the Hercules Intermodal Transit Center. RDG’s designs transformed a previously altered Bay shoreline into a resilient estuarine landscape that integrated habitat recovery, shoreline stabilization, and long-term ecological function within a major transit-oriented redevelopment project. By restoring the creek and wetlands, RDG demonstrated how infrastructure and ecological systems can be integrated to strengthen regional habitat connectivity, improve water quality, and create a more resilient San Pablo Bay waterfront.

The site before restoration: bare, graded earth with the an undeveloped creek channel.
